Nature’s Fascinating Arachnids
Tarantulas are one of the most captivating types of arachnids, known for their large size, vibrant colours, and unique behaviours.
With around 1,000 species spread across the globe, tarantulas inhabit regions ranging from tropical rainforests to dry deserts.
Tarantulas are notable for their hairy bodies, which range in color from browns and blacks to more vibrant hues like deep blues, greens, and even metallic shades. This hair, known as setae, helps them sense their environment, feeling vibrations in the air and on the ground.
Tarantulas can be found on nearly every continent, favoring warm environments. Their habitats range from the lush forests of South America to the arid deserts of North America, Africa, and Asia.
Each species has adapted to its unique environment, with some burrowing deep into the ground for protection, while others create webs or live in tree canopies.
One of the fascinating aspects of tarantulas is their molting process. As they grow, tarantulas periodically shed their exoskeleton, a process called molting. This enables them to heal injuries, grow new limbs, and even regenerate lost hairs.
Molting can take several hours and is a vulnerable time for tarantulas, so they often retreat to safe, hidden areas.
Another behaviour unique to New World tarantulas (those found in the Americas) is their use of urticating hairs.
